CARDIAC ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY (EP)

Cardiac electrophysiology is the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease as it relates to heart rhythms. To do this, physicians use a procedure called an electrophysiology study, where thin electrode catheters are inserted into veins in the groin or neck area and threaded into the heart. Electrical impulses are then applied to the heart to determine how the heart responds.  By diagnosing slow and fast heart rates, these abnormal rhythms, or arrhythmias, can then be treated several ways, including with medication, defibrillators, pacemakers, re-synchronization therapy, and catheter ablations.
